Concern over jobless youngsters

More than 650 people are registered jobless in Jersey
Letters have been sent to all Jersey school leavers asking if they are having problems finding work.

It is due to concerns about the number of unemployed young people.

Unemployment has risen again in the island, with 674 registered jobless in December, compared to 642 the previous month.

For the first time the figures have been broken down into age groups and almost 200 of them are under the age of 25.

Fewer apprenticeships

Employment Committee president, Senator Paul Routier, said one of the reasons was there were fewer apprenticeships.

But he has asked the Economic Development Committee to help.

Meanwhile, Jersey's military liaison officer has renewed an appeal for young people to find out about jobs in the armed forces.

Ian Robinson is concerned about the latest figures showing so many people under the age of 25 who are registered unemployed.

He has invited recruitment staff to Jersey and to tell young people about the opportunities available.
