Unemployment triples in a year
Workers in office
Senator Paul Routier says seansonal work affects the figures
The number of people registered unemployed in Jersey in the run-up to Christmas has tripled in a year.

There were 642 people registered with the Employment and Social Security Department in November.

In November 2002, there were only 204 people on the register.

The Employment and Social Security Department President, Senator Paul Routier, partly blames a slowdown in the economy for the increase and says that various employers on the island are finding it tough.

Seasonal changes

The figures also show an increase of a third in the number of people registered over a month.

The 642 people currently registered is an increase from 485 in September.

Of the increase between September and November, Senator Routier said an increase is expected at this time of year when seasonal jobs end or change.

He added it usually starts to go down in the New Year.

Recently the Employment Department encouraged all people out of work to ensure they are on the register.

Senator Routier says that also may have contributed to the figures.
