Electric bikes will compete in the event |
Time is running out for teams to register for what is being billed as motorsport's first "green" grand prix. Ten teams have so far signed up for the Isle of Man TTXGP event, which will see motorcycles with "clean emissions" technologies competing. It means bikes must be powered by non-carbon based fuels to take part in the event on the TT circuit on 12 June. Teams have until 31 January to register, while riders have until 31 March to sign up. Bike showcase Organiser Azhar Hussain said: "We already have more than 10 confirmed participating teams, including teams from the USA and Germany. "Leading UK engineering faculty Kingston University has also confirmed its place. "The students were one of the first teams to come on board and have spent the winter months developing their prototype." The event is being seen as a way for global innovators in racing and clean emission technologies to compete. Organisers have been showcasing a motorcycle, called the TTX01, as an example of what race fans can expect to see in the event. The TTX01, which has been developed with contributions from the UK government, is an electric-powered bike capable of reaching speeds of 125mph.
