The Clean Emissions Grand Prix will take place along the TT circuit

Plans to run a "clean emissions" race at next year's TT festival could form a key part of its future, according to Environment Minister John Shimmin.

The "green" TTxGP will be held on the Isle of Man TT circuit alongside the regular races in June 2009.

Mr Shimmin believes attracting innovators in "green" motorsport could be the way ahead for the event.

Organisers have travelled to the Far East to drum-up support with manufacturers.

"The innovation and the technology put together with the TT course and my environmental hat means that we now have an opportunity," Mr Shimmin said.

"The local road racer Peter Hindley has the same idea, he came up with it separately.

"We've put it together, we've now thrown the gauntlet down."

He added: "We go live in the Far East today and you will find out more in the weeks ahead if we actually make enough interest to see if people will invest.

"We see this as the future and the market is unlimited."
