There are fears of foot and mouth spreading to the Isle of Man |
Two countryside activity centres have been temporarily closed following the outbreak of foot and mouth in the UK. The Eary Cushlin youth adventure centre, near Dalby, and the Ardwhallan outdoor pursuits centre at West Baldwin, are shut until further notice.
The closures follow advice from the Manx Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
All countryside Duke of Edinburgh's Award-related expeditions have also been stopped for the time being.
Events cancelled
The west side of Injebreck, where Ardwhallan is sited, remains open and if sheep can be prevented from entering the land and bio-security measures are introduced at the entrance, it is hoped Ardwhallan will re-open soon.
The new measures come after the Department of Agriculture put a complete ban on the import of animals, or any movement of animals on the island, over the weekend.
Farmers with recent imported livestock were being asked to stay vigilant, while members of the public were also asked not to walk in the countryside.
The Royal Manx Agricultural Show - planned for this Thursday and Friday - was also cancelled along with Douglas farmers market which was due to be held on Saturday.
Other events affected include a charity-sponsored walk by Manx Charity Aid's volunteers which was due to take place this coming Sunday along the old railway lines from Douglas to Peel.
