The stamp sets cost 20 each |
The launch of a set of stamps to mark the centenary of the Isle of Man's TT races exceeded all expectations, the island's Post Office said. People queued in Douglas on New Year's Day as the Regent Street post office opened for just one hour to allow people to buy the collectables.
Sidecar legend Dave Molyneux completed a lap of the TT course on a motorbike before arriving for the launch.
He signed about 100 first day cover sets to mark the occasion.
Definitive list
Philatelic bureau manager Dot Tilbury, said: "The launch exceeded my expectations, I thought it would be popular but certainly did not expect to see so many people queuing half an hour before the launch.
"It was a super morning and the ultimate start to the 2007 TT centenary year."
The stamps feature a definitive list of the greatest TT competitors of all time.
Other collectables introduced to celebrate the centenary include TT postcards, mini stamp sheet folders, TT coins and the TT 100 book.
