The project is in Southampton, where Guernsey cancer patients are sent |
An appeal has been launched to raise money for a new teenage cancer unit which could benefit young people from Guernsey. The project at Southampton University Hospital is aimed at making teenagers feel at home during their stay. The unit, which is expected to cost about £1.3m, would be available for young people living in Guernsey to use. Lindsay Wilson from the Teenage Cancer Trust said it would make a big difference to young cancer patients. She said: "They're not cheap to build, but we build them in NHS hospitals so that teenagers can be treated together and not end up on a children's unit or an adult's unit. "Therefore they get strength from each other, they get a positive environment, they get an environment that suits their needs where they can continue to be a teenager, not just going through cancer. "If anybody is diagnosed in the Channel Islands with cancer they would end up in Southampton and so therefore having a unit there will make a massive amount of difference to people from the islands."
