Tobyn Horton: Won gold for Guernsey in the 2007 Island Games |
A sea front in Guernsey is to be turned into an elite cycling race track to host a new event next year. The Guernsey Velo Club is organising a criterion [town road race] in St Peter Port next September.
It is expected the course will be similar to the one used during the Island Games in 2003.
Velo Club president Gary Wallbridge says it will be a great spectacle and should attract several of the top riders from the UK to the island.
Guernsey's 21-year-old Island Games cycling gold medallist Tobyn Horton will also be competing.
Plans have been submitted to the States and the velo club has received initial approval from Culture and Leisure.
Elite races
It is hoped the department will also provide financial support for the event on 28 September.
"Town centre racing tends to be the most exciting form of bike racing," Mr Wallbridge told BBC News.
"Competitors in the elite races can complete the 1km to 1.5km laps in about one minute 15 seconds, so spectators can see them as they continue to lap the course."
Mr Wallbridge says a race is also planned for under12s on a modified course.
If the event proves successful, the club hopes to repeat it in 2009.
