Beach litter count totals 22,000

Plastic, food wrappers and cigarette stubs were collected
Beaches in the Bailiwick of Guernsey were littered with about 22,000 pieces of rubbish in 2006.

The Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Beachwatch survey looked at litter levels across the UK, including 32 Guernsey beaches and five from Herm.

The survey recorded litter levels of 1,988.7 items per kilometre (0.62 miles) in 2006, up from 1,045 items per kilometre in 1994.

Environment Minister David De Lisle said the litter also harmed sea life.

He said Guernsey had beautiful beaches and it was a shame that some people chose to spoil them.

Items included plastic, cotton bud sticks, food wrappers and cigarette stubs.
