Vandals target race track rails
L'Ancresse horse racing 2005
The race club is hopeful the track will be ready for 1 May
Preparations for Guernsey's big annual race day on 1 May have suffered a set back because of vandals.

Race organisers were forced to scramble through thick bramble bushes on L'Ancresse Common after the vandals removed some of fencing.

Seventeen lengths of rail, once used at Ascot, were discovered strewn across the golf course over the weekend.

Last year's horseracing was the first at the venue for 13 years and attracted thousands of spectators.

Jim Jamouneau, race club organiser, said he could not understand why they had been targeted.

He told BBC News: "It's a sport, so why would people want to go and vandalise things.

"The club's got to go to a lot of expense to put this on for the public of Guernsey and it's very disheartening to find people can't leave things alone."

Mr Jamouneau said he was confident the club would be ready in time, provided there were no more incidents.
