Underwater cables speed web use

Connection and download speeds will be improved by the cables
Internet users in Guernsey can expect faster broadband in future but the price will not be coming down.

Cable and Wireless will start Project Hugo this weekend, which will involve cables being laid along the seabed to connect Guernsey to England and France.

It is expected to improve connection and increase download speeds.

A utilities watchdog has called for price cuts but C&W director Mark Briers said these were unrealistic for an island the size of Guernsey.

In February, the Office of Utility Regulation asked C&W to lower the prices it charged other internet service providers to use its network by 22%.

C&W said the proposals would stifle investment and meant local internet providers would pay less than for the same service in the UK.

The watchdog will announce its decision on prices later in April.
