Ramsar status will help protect the island's marine habitats
The diverse bird and plant life of Alderney is being promoted as part of a special weekend to attract tourists.

It is hoped the Wild Birds and Flora Weekend will also raise awareness of the island's attempt to get Ramsar status for part of its coastline.

The Ramsar designation aims to protect and promote conservation of wetlands of international importance.

The weekend will include guided walks and boat trips out to the nearby puffin and grey seal colonies.

Protected habitats

The island has been holding the four-day event for four years.

One of the visiting guides will be Dr Mike Pienkowski, chairman of the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum and one of those responsible for liaising with the Channel Islands and British governments about Ramsar applications.

The areas involved include Clonque Bay and Hannaine Bay and the islands of Burhou Ortac and Les Etacs.

Gaining the status will help ensure marine habitats around the island are protected.
