Grower's plea for farmers' market
Cauliflowers and tomatoes
The hedge veg system relies on buyers' honesty to pay for produce
A Guernsey grower claims farmers' markets could be the perfect way to promote local produce.

The massive popularity of a recent giant "hedge veg" event as part of Spring Floral Week saw stalls of food and flowers sold out in minutes.

Hedge veg is used to describe the way local people sell home-grown produce from stalls on the roadside or garden hedges, with a tin or box for payment.

Dave Gorvel says a regular sale could help the island's small-scale growers.

He said: "In our line we've got a lot of small producers who supply us. They might only grow beans or they might only grow cucumbers or tomatoes, but they really have no market for their local stuff and that's what you actually need.

"Certainly some of the stores are trying to sell more local produce, but it's all going a bit slowly."
