Traffic week is driving at safety
Fire crews at crashed car
Some 800 road collisions were reported to police in 2003
Guernsey police are targeting motorists driving badly during the island's Road Safety Week.

Officers will be focusing on a range of motoring offences, including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, pavement parking and drink-driving.

The week, co-ordinated by pedestrian safety group STEPS, involves several other organisations, including the emergency services and motor traders.

The campaign is being run until Saturday, 13 November.

In 2003, there were 800 road traffic collisions reported to the police. Sixty-three people received serious injuries and two died.

Organisers of the safety week want to try to decrease such numbers for 2004.

Pat Wisher of STEPS said: "Road Safety Week is held at this time of the year to coincide with the darker evenings after the clocks go back when road users need to take extra care.

"It aims to stimulate community involvement in promoting road safety awareness, not only in this particular week, but also year-round."
