Politician frustrated by 'apathy'
View of Alderney
RoSPA says seat belts and crash helmets save many lives
An Alderney politician campaigning for the introduction of a seat belt law in the island says he is frustrated by residents complacency to road safety.

Ralph Burridge says his ideas to improve safety in Alderney are getting little support.

Alderney is thought to be the only British Isle which does not have any seat belt and crash helmet legislation.

But a presentation by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) was attended by only 10 residents.

Every household in Alderney was sent a leaflet about the presentation, but Mr Burridge believes residents are complacent because there are not many accidents on the island.

A RoSPA spokesman says most people in the British Isles do accept that many lives are saved every year by seat belts and crash helmets.
