Choice of ministers 'difficult'
Guernsey States Crest
States members have to decide who will head up the new ministries
A Guernsey deputy says he sees problems ahead in choosing senior politicians for the island's new-look government.

Having elected Deputy Laurie Morgan as Chief Minister, States members meet on Tuesday to decide who will head up the new ministries and departments.

Deputy John Gollop said it would be difficult for members to make an informed choice.

"We have 45 new States members and two from Alderney and we don't know a lot of these people.

Special sitting

"Twelve of those are brand new members, some not even known to other members, and how can these people make a vote on the merits of candidates for the vacancies?

"Even for those of us who are experienced States members, we have to make a decision on the capabilities of the new people.

"But we don't know if they are going to be brilliant politicians, competent politicians or not make the grade."

There will be a further special sitting of the States on Thursday to elect members of departments and committees.
