Laurie Morgan
Three deputies were in the running for the top job
The first ever Chief Minister to head Guernsey's new-look government has been announced at a special States sitting.

Deputy Laurie Morgan polled 26 votes, putting him ahead of Deputy Bernard Flouquet who was second with 19.

The third candidate, Deputy Mike Torode, was eliminated after the first round when he polled six votes.

States members will reconvene on Tuesday morning to elect ministers of the 10 new departments and five committee chairmen.

There will be a further special sitting on Thursday to elect members of departments and committees.

Each of the candidates for the Chief Minister's position delivered a speech at the start of the States sitting on Saturday morning.

Before the meeting began, all 45 members of the States were sworn into office.
