Call to slash drink-drive limit

Drivers face new breathalyser tests
A Guernsey support group would like to see stricter drink limits for motorists in the island.

Dave Newman, head of Guernsey's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council, has welcomed the introduction from 29 March of roadside breathalyser testing by police.

But he would like to see the limit reduced from 80mg per 100ml of blood to 15mg per 100ml.

Last year 239 drivers were convicted of drink driving in the island.

Mr Newman said: "At this moment in time you can consume a small amount of alcohol and be under the legal limit.

"However, even that small amount of alcohol has been shown to significantly reduce our reaction time when we drive.

"We are getting behind a potentially lethal object with a mood-altering drug in our system in a small and very cramped island and it is an extremely dangerous and irresponsible thing to do."
