Refuse rates rise feared
Litter in bin
It is hoped to get the waste plant finished by the end of 2006
Residents in St Sampsons fear they could face high refuse rates because of the proposed new waste-to-energy plant in Guernsey.

The potential knock-on effects of the facility at Longue Hougue were discussed at a Parish Douzaine meeting on Monday night.

The plant will replace the landfill site at Mont Cuet.

But Senior Constable, Alison Brouard, said she was concerned the parish might end up footing the refuse bill for a development it did not want in the first place.

"Once that monstrosity is up and running and we are all using it, our rates are going to go sky high," she said.

The firm developing the plant, Lurgi UK Limited, has begun preparatory work for the new plant.

It is hoped it will be operational by late 2006.
