Airport charges rising
A Guernsey politician says inflation and soaring security costs have led to a rise in airport charges.

Board of Administration President Deputy Roger Berry says fees have gone up by 4.3 %.

Deputy Berry says new security measures are meant to be applied all over the world in the wake of the 11 September 2001 attacks and cannot be avoided.

He said if Guernsey did not comply with additional checks on passengers and baggage, other airports would not accept planes from the Bailiwick.

He added that the airport does not have a surplus of cash at the best of times, as its main aim is to break even each year.

He said that even though Jersey's airport charges have recently fallen by 20%, they are still higher than Guernsey's.
