The Board of Administration believes the current length satisfies the island's needs for air links, for the foreseeable future.

A report into the airport by British Aerospace consultants earlier this year concluded the runway needs to be extended at a cost of �20m to sustain the needs of the island over the next 25 years.

But the board said the two main airlines operating in and out of the island have not indicated any requirement for a longer runway.

It said that whatever committee or department was responsible for Guernsey's airport in the future should give the issue further consideration.

For the time being the board is asking to review the instrument landing systems and the requirement for safety areas at the ends of the runway.
