A Guernsey deputy is seeking to alter plans for an inquiry into the contracts on the island's airport redevelopment. Several builders claim to be owed thousands of pounds following the liquidation of a sub-contractor, Concept.
Deputy Eric Walters submitted a requete calling for the island's Audit Commission to investigate what checks were made on the company before the contract was awarded.
Now Deputy John Roper has placed an amendment to the requete calling for the work to be carried out by the new Public Accounts Committee next year, as it would be better suited to such an investigation.
Investigative body
Deputy Roper is concerned the current requete before the States to start an investigation is looking to lay blame.
He also said until it is known if any legal action is going ahead in connection with work at the airport, an inquiry could make a mess of any such moves.
He said: "Most of us want to see an inquiry, but we want to see the right inquiry by the right people and, above all, at the right time.
"The idea to use the Audit Commission, I think, is not a very clever one because it is not an investigative body.
"We have decided to set up, from May next year, such a body in the form of the Public Accounts Committee."
