A Guernsey anti-smoking group has said a total ban on smoking would be unworkable. The Guernsey Adolescent non-Smoking Project (Gasp) has been responding to calls in medical journal The Lancet for a complete ban on the sale of tobacco.
The group says it can understand the reasons behind the suggestion.
But Gasp chairman Alun Williams says the call probably reflects the frustration health professionals must feel when they see the effects of smoking on people.
Mr Williams says the story of alcohol prohibition in the United States during the 1920s shows such a move could never work.
He says it is far better to persuade and help people stop smoking, not to force them.
