Smoke-free zones urged
Campaigners are pressing for more no-smoking areas in Guernsey.

Gasp - the Guernsey Adolescent Smokefree Project - has joined a group of charities working to highlight the dangers of passive smoking.

The Clear the Air Coalition wants to see more smoke-free zones in pubs, clubs, restaurants and workplaces.

Gasp chairman Alun Williams said no-one should be forced to breathe in someone else's tobacco smoke.

Guernsey introduced a series of measures in 1997 to try to cut the number of young people smoking, including raising the age for buying cigarettes from 16 to 18.

They also introduced Gasp, to try to cut tobacco use.

A survey by Exeter University in February showed the measures were working with only half the number of teenagers smoking compared with the rest of the UK.
