The law refers only to mobile phones, not two-way radios |
A Guernsey politician has launched a scathing attack on opponents of the new mobile phone ban. The law banning the use of mobile phones while driving was past by the States last week and came into force immediately.
Critics have claimed that the definition of what is covered by the ban is too vague and could be interpreted to include systems such as the radios used by the island's emergency services.
Deputy Peter Derham says the claims are an attempt to de-rail it at the last minute.
Deputy Derham said the law refers solely to mobile phones and was never intended to cover other items, including two-way radios.
He said the Guernsey legislation is exactly the same as that used in Jersey and the Isle of Man, where there have not been any problems with confusion over what the ban includes.
