Illegal: Guernsey drivers are banned from using mobile phones
Guernsey's politicians have banned the use of mobile phones by motorists in the latest meeting of the States.

During Thursday's talks, they also voted not to extend the island airport's runway.

States members have agreed though to fund the extra cost needed to repair the jetty at St Peter Port Harbour at a cost of more than 3m.

The president of the Board of Administration, Deputy Roger Berry, said the level of spending needed to lengthen the landing strip could not be passed onto travellers as the expense would be too great.

Island safety

An amendment from Deputy Geoff Norman to the Board of Administration's runway proposals instructs the board to include plans to extend the runway when it next comes to the States.

Guernsey Police said the phone ban was a significant move which would help increase road safety in the Island.

States members have also agreed to fund the extra cost needed to repair the new jetty at St Peter Port Harbour.

Initial investigations suggested the work could be completed for 3.2m.

But Deputy Roger Berry said the amount of work needed was far greater than had been expected.
