Brown backs Blair for EU leader

The row over who will become the first President of the European Council has begun, despite the Lisbon Treaty not yet being fully ratified.

The UK is backing former PM Tony Blair, but French support for Mr Blair has waned, while Germany is positively cool towards his nomination - and Ireland has its own candidate.
