Pasquale Tegano was considered an important and dangerous fugitive |
Italian police say they have captured a senior mafia figure who had been on the run for 10 years. They say the suspect, Pasquale Tegano, 49, is wanted for a series of alleged crimes including murder and extortion.
Tegano, who had been on the country's list of 30 most dangerous fugitives, was arrested in an apartment in the southern port of Reggio Calabria.
He is said to be part of the so-called 'Ndrangheta syndicate which has begun to rival the Sicilian Mafia.
The Calabrian mafia, or 'Ndrangheta, specialises in drug trafficking from Colombian and other Latin American countries to Europe.
A police statement said Tegano "was considered the most important and dangerous 'Ndrangheta fugitive until now".
Police also arrested three people on suspicion of helping Tegano.
In February, two senior members of the organisation were arrested.
