Police in Italy have arrested the man who was the target of a Mafia shootout that accidentally killed a teenager at the weekend. Salvatore Giuliano, whose family once controlled Naples' central Forcella neighbourhood, was arrested outside the city early Tuesday morning.
Annalisa Durante, 14, was shot dead as she chatted outside her home.
Mr Giuliano denied having fired the fatal bullet or using the girl as a shield, as some witnesses suggested.
He was arrested at a relative's home two days after Mafia hitmen tried to murder him.
Funeral
The incident has provoked indignation and calls for a greater police presence in the Mafia-afflicted Forcella neighbourhood.
Thousands of people came to the local church Tuesday to pay their last respects to the girl and many signed an appeal against the Camorra, the Neapolitan version of the Mafia.
At the funeral the local priest called for a new pact between the people and the institutions to allow the neighbourhood to be reborn.
Many residents say they have been abandoned by the authorities, pointing out that there is no police station in the neighbourhood.
But experts say lots of local people depend on the Mafia for their livelihood and prefer to cohabit with the criminal gangs rather than speak out against them.
