Police say speed has caused 50 accidents in Jersey this year |
Motorists are being advised to cut their speeds as Jersey schools go back over the next few days. Police say this year speed has caused 50 accidents in Jersey and are urging drivers to act responsibly.
Police are planning to watch close to island schools, where their research shows most accidents caused by speeding happen.
Last year, there were 343 accidents where people were hurt.
Observing limits
However, police claim they are making some progress with their campaigns to raise public awareness.
Last year, the number of crashes where people were seriously hurt fell by 20%.
Jersey's road safety officer, Philip Blake, said it is vital motorists observe speed limits.
He said: "Research has shown that of you're are doing 40 miles-per-hour along any stretch road, the chances are that you're going to kill someone.
"If you slow to 30 miles-per-hour, it reduces you reduce that by 50%, and if you're at 20 then there's only a 10% chance of a fatality occurring.
"So, if people can keep under the limit, the chances of killing anyone are vastly reduced."
