Monopoly call over ferry
Ferry
The ferry was permitted to sail on Wednesday evening
A group supporting the troubled ferry company Emeraude Lines is calling for it to be the only operator on the Jersey to St Malo route.

Jersey Tourism president, Deputy Lyndon Farnham, who is also the Vice President of the Harbours Committee, says a monopoly will not benefit the island.

But campaigners such as Sean Power believe competition on the route with Condor Ferries has not worked.

He says it is a case where a monopoly is needed.

Deputy Farnham says he wants Emeraude to continue operating, but not at the expense of competition.

Hundreds of people have attended public meetings following news of the company's financial problems.

Emeraude's Solidor 5 ferry was impounded on Monday by Jersey authorities following a dispute over harbours fees.

It was released on Wednesday after the Harbours Department said "sufficient comfort" had been provided by the administrator in respect of outstanding and ongoing harbour dues.

Emeraude filed for protection from bankruptcy in St Malo one week ago with debts said to be in the region of four million euros.
