The future of Jersey's dairy industry is to be the subject of an island-wide debate. It follows the publication of a report that looks at how Jersey's dairy industry should be managed and developed to protect the island's cattle.
The debate has been organised by the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
Dr Maurice Bichard has been asked to undertake a review of the current status of the island herd of Jersey dairy cattle and to make recommendations as to the future management and development of the cows.
Reduce numbers
The Society's council has recognised the need to reduce the number of cattle in the island's herd and more than 20% have gone in the last year.
Now they are calling for proposals to be introduced which will bolster the support services available to cattle breeders from the Department of Agriculture.
Dr Bichard has revealed plans to sustain the breeding programme of Jersey cattle.
They will maintain the integrity of the breed and still comply with international "best practice" rules, ensuring genetic diversity within the Jersey herd.
