 Guernsey could face a loss of 20,000 day-trippers |
A dramatic drop in passengers between Guernsey and mainland Europe has been described as worrying. In the latest passenger movement figures released by the Advisory and Finance Committee, the total numbers travelling to and from the island both by air and sea was down 7.1% when compared to the same period in 2002.
The President of the island's Hotel and Tourism Association, Carl Symes, said the overall loss of revenue for businesses is cause for concern and could be bad for the island's economy.
The Tourist Board refused to comment on the figures.
Less marketing
Mr Symes expressed particular concern at the lack of day visitors from the Continent.
He said: "Undoubtedly, there has been less marketing because we haven't got the Victor Hugo celebration this year.
"But I suspect this is going to cost us somewhere in the region of 20,000 day-trippers in a year.
"Frankly, the economy can ill afford that number of people not coming."
