Calls for more boat safety gear

Rescuers want vessels to have proper safety equipment on board
Jersey's Fire and Rescue Service is repeating a warning for people not to go out on boats that are not properly equipped.

It follows the rescue of four people from a drifting boat that did not have a VHF radio or flares onboard.

The 21-foot (6.5 metre) boat broke down in the waters near Beauport on Monday.

Last month, the St Helier lifeboat crew was called out to two boats over one weekend which did not have radios and it called for people to be more safety conscious when they go sailing.

Necessary equipment

During the Beauport incident, the anchor chain also broke and the boat drifted towards rocks.

The people on board raised the alarm by using a mobile phone because there was no radio on the boat. There were no flares and only two lifejackets.

The Fire and Rescue Service rescued the four people from the boat and brought them ashore uninjured.

The service said: "We'd ask all persons that take to sea to insure that their vessels are equipped with all the necessary equipment."
