Mobile phone firm defends mast plan

A 15 metre-high mast is planned for St Sampsons
A telephone company is defending its plans for more than 20 new phone masts to be erected around Guernsey.

The 2003 States Policy and Resource Plan suggests operators should share sites to minimise visual impacts.

However, Wave Telecom's managing director, Tim Ringsdore, said this is not as simple as it sounds.

The company says it is using mast sharing to minimise the need for new structures, but still needs to build more to provide an island-wide service.

Different frequencies

Residents of Les Osmonds Lane were the first to voice concerns about the plans for a 15 metre (50 foot) high aerial to be erected in their area.

Wave Telecom has plans to put up more than 25 masts around the island.

The company will be mast sharing on a number of sites where there are mobile phone or other masts and is working with Cable and Wireless, the States of Guernsey and other private bodies to this end.

But Wave's Tim Ringsdore said its licence requires it to use a different frequency from Cable and Wireless.

The company says this means it will have to put up some extra masts, despite sharing with other communications structures.
