Mast plan 'could open floodgates'
Mobile phone mast
A 17-metre high mast is planned for St Sampsons
An application for a new mobile phone mast and antenna could open the floodgates for more unsightly poles and dishes in Guernsey, an islander fears.

Keith Tostevin is concerned about an application from Wave Telecom to erect a mast at St Sampsons.

It will be situated within 100 metres of his property in Les Osmonds Lane.

He believes the impact of the 17-metre high structure on the look of the area and what he claims are the unknown health effects of mobile phone technology make the masts unacceptable.

'Made mistake'

Mr Tostevin said Wave Telecom should be allowed to use the existing masts operated by Cable and Wireless to prevent the need for new structures to be built.

He said the States made a mistake in not ensuring this was possible as part of the sale of Guernsey Telecoms.

"I cannot see any reason why the existing Guernsey Telecoms sites cannot be used for the new company coming in.

"If we get another three to four companies coming to the island, we will get another 25 poles."
