Fears over market revamp
Guernsey market
Details of the market scheme have been unveiled
A Guernsey market trader is concerned that if a large supermarket opened in the revamped St Peter Port market, it could drive traders out of town.

Dave Birch who runs a fruit and vegetable stall wants more information about the tenants in the new development.

Plans have been released showing the layout for business units, but there is no indication which retailers will take the spaces.

Mr Birch said uncertainty about the trading future was casting a shadow over the project.

He said: "If its going to be a supermarket that is going to sell fish, meat and groceries they are going to have the prime site and we are going to be pushed into the back end of town."

Updated plans for the market were unveiled this week.

The new market will contain three major retail outlets as well as smaller shops and restaurants.

Existing market traders will be relocated in the old fish market.

There will be a public terrace overlooking Church Square.

Market Street will be for deliveries only and Fountain Street will stay open to two-way traffic.
