Police say any alcohol will impair driving ability |
Police hope a new pub quiz will prevent Jersey's road users from drinking and driving. By the end of May, 122 people had been arrested in Jersey for drink-driving, an 11% increase on the same time last year.
Now sets of quiz cards testing islanders' knowledge about what alcohol does to the body are being sent to Jersey pubs, and there are to be daily road checks by States and honorary police.
The pub quiz cards test islanders about the number of units in particular drinks, the speed the body burns off alcohol and how many hours people should wait before driving the next day.
Constant reminders
Of the 122 people arrested on the island for drink driving, 36 of them crashed their vehicle.
Most of the people arrested were men, and most were over the age of 20.
Police hope that by constantly reminding people about the dangers there will be fewer cases of drink driving.
The States of Jersey Police said: "Any alcohol, even a small drink, will impair driving ability.
"Nearly one in seven of all deaths on the road involve drivers who are over the legal limit. At twice the legal limit, people are 50 times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident.
"The answer? Do not drink and drive."
