Debate receives mixed response
Islanders have expressed mixed views over the success of a public meeting called over the proposed introduction of controversial new taxes in Jersey.

The meeting - organised by the Jersey Rights Association (JRA) at the Town Hall - was attended by about 200 people.

They had the chance to question politicians, including Finance president, Deputy Terry le Sueur.

But no vote was taken and opinions were divided over whether anything was achieved.

The JRA is concerned over the introduction of a sewerage charge and other possible taxes in the island.

Not finalised

It is worried the less well off will suffer the most from any extra charges, due to come into effect next year.

Nick Corbel, leader of Jersey's Transport and General Workers' Union, said 'people power' could help stop the introduction of controversial new taxes.

But finance chiefs said the meeting was premature and plans for the taxes had not been finalised.

The ideas are due to be discussed by the States at the end of the month.
