Church earmarked for homes
Salem Methodist Church
Church leaders say Salem Methodist is expensive to maintain
A historic Guernsey church could be knocked down to make way for new homes.

Trustees of St Peter Port Methodist Church have applied to redevelop the Salem site in Vauvert.

If the plans get the go-ahead, the congregation will move to Ebenezer Church in Brock Road.

It would mean that building being used for worship for the first time since 1993.

Salem Methodist is a popular place of worship, but church leaders say it is expensive to maintain, and access is not easy.

Services are still held regularly at Salem.

'More potential'

But if the Island Development Committee gives the go-ahead to replace it with residential units, the congregation will move to Ebenezer Church.

The Victorian-listed Ebenezer Church building was saved after an eight-year campaign, during which time it stayed closed.

The Reverend Ian Suttie, superintendent minister of the Bailiwick of Guernsey Circuit, said they wanted to use the funds from any sale of Salem to develop the site at Ebenezer.

He said the Ebenezer church building had more potential and better access.
