Neighbourhood Watch schemes can help reduce the fear of crime
The National Neighbourhood Watch Association says Jersey could benefit from introducing its schemes.

It is an option being considered by Jersey's Home Affairs Committee.

Neighbourhood Watch is a charity that brings together the public and the police to help prevent crime.

There are currently no Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the island, but it is something that Deputy Bob Hill is keen to introduce.

Earlier this year, he asked the Home Affairs Committee to look into the idea.

Reduce crime

Julian Lolor-Smith, co-ordinator for the Isle of Man's Neighbourhood Watch Association, said it had helped reduce crime there and would be a good scheme for Jersey to implement.

He said it worked well in an island where there were a lot people moving in for a while to work, and then leaving again.

It meant people in local communities knew what was going on.

It is thought Neighbourhood Watch also helps reduce people's fear of crime, as well as actually reducing the number of offences taking place.
