The Guernsey Welfare Service (GWS) is among 300 voluntary groups throughout Britain to have been shortlisted to receive a Queen's Golden Jubilee Award.
The Chairman of the Committee of the GWS, Reverend John Ironside, said he is pleased the service's work is being recognised in this way
Since its small beginnings in 1896, the GWS has been working hard in Guernsey, helping islanders who find themselves in financial difficulties.
Over the years, the Guernsey Welfare Service has altered its services according to the different needs of islanders.
Vital service
Currently its focus is on providing a pre-school and the other major concern is to help locals who fall into the poverty trap.
A subsidised pre-school is open four days a week in St Peter Port and it offers a vital service for local children.
The Women's Royal Voluntary Service in Alderney and Alderney Library are also on the list.
The results will be announced on 2 June.
