Tenants facing subsidy cut
Jersey's Housing President says the rent rebate system for States tenants is too generous.

The Committee wants to stop paying subsidies to those it says can afford to pay, and it wants to cut other benefits.

Housing President, Deputy Terry Le Main, said its building maintenance programme was under threat.

The housing department pays out about 23m in subsidies a year.

That comes out of the income it receives from tenants in the private and public sectors.

Maintain properties

But with more accommodation available in both sectors, the housing department is looking at which States tenants still deserve help.

It is concerned it will not be able to afford to maintain its properties.

Deputy Le Main said the current system was too generous, with 60 public sector and 45 private sector tenants with savings and investments over 50,000 still receiving subsidised rent.

If the proposals are approved, they will no longer be able to claim.
