The States is considering a translation policy |
Jersey's Portuguese-speaking citizens could soon have access to government documents in their own language. It is being proposed that all States departments should be issued with guidelines to translate reports into other languages.
It comes after a study into the cost of translating government papers into Portuguese began two years ago.
It was commissioned by the Policy and Resources Committee and undertaken by Doctor Maria Jose Craveiro, from Lisbon University.
Improved communication
Her report has now been published and will form the basis of a States translation policy.
Policy and Resources is preparing a proposition to go before the House which includes compiling a list of approved translators and guidelines for all States departments.
The committee hopes it will improve communication between the government and Jersey's non-English speakers.
The committee is also looking at reports and documents being translated into other languages.
