'Support' for euthanasia petition
Nearly 2,000 Guernsey residents have joined a campaign in support of doctor-assisted-death for the terminally ill.

Campaign organiser Ann Crocker said the response to her island-wide postcard petition has been overwhelming.

Her petition urges Guernsey's politicians to ensure the investigation into euthanasia is completed as "a matter of urgency".

In June 2002, the States voted by a majority of 38 to 17 in favour of an "investigation" into the issue after a Requete brought by Deputy Pat Mellor. A working party was then suggested in September 2002.

Investigation team

Ann Crocker said she was horrified to learn the States working party has not yet been set up, six months after the House decided to launch an official investigation.

Mrs Crocker believes the response to her campaign is evidence that many islanders want the working party to get on with the job.

Concerns over the time it is taking to get the investigation team together were raised in the States last week by Vale Deputy Mellor.

Deputy Laurie Morgan of the Advisory and Finance Committee said a working party is due to start on the subject in April or May.
