Immigration staff facing overload
Jersey's Immigration Department is asking for an extra member of staff to cope with new human rights legislation.

The department is setting up an appeals system for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants caught trying to get into Jersey.

Last year was busier than normal for the island's immigration officers.

There was an increase in the number of people trying to reach the UK from St Malo, as asylum seekers and illegal immigrants began using ports further away from Calais.

Chief Immigration Officer John Noel said the department was already stretched, with more illegal immigrants arriving in Jersey.

He said that was coupled with an increase in ferry services to France now that Condor Ferries had been granted a licence to carry cars to St Malo.
