Call made for work permits
The director of a Jersey employment organisation is worried that high numbers of Polish workers will come to the island when the country joins the European Union.

David Witherington, director of Jersey's Advisory and Conciliation Service, said workers would have free access and would be attracted by better wages.

He supports the rights of workers from all sections of the community.

But he said his personal view was work permits would provide a fair system.

Work shortage

"I think we could have a situation where we have large numbers of people emigrating to Jersey, because of the work here, and a lack of work in Poland," he said.

"I think that could cause a problem - in that too many people isn't good for Jersey.

"I think work permits have a part to play here.

"I know that, if we had work permits, everyone would have to have them, including English people, French people etc."
