The St Lawrence Constable is concerned about the low turnout |
A public meeting is to be held to try and determine why many eligible voters in the Jersey Parish of St Lawrence did not vote in the recent elections. Geoffrey Fisher, the St Lawrence Constable, is investigating why the Parish had a low turnout at the recent senatorial and deputy elections.
He hopes that by letting parishioners explain their reasons for not voting, he can tackle the problem.
The meeting is being held at St Lawrence Parish Hall at 2000 GMT on 25 March.
We want to give people an opportunity to tell us what it is about the way we're governing that is turning them off St Lawrence Deputy Maurice Duras |
"The turnouts in recent years have not been as high as one would have hoped," said Constable Fisher.
"I think it's important to encourage people to vote.
"So we thought it would be a good idea to hold this meeting and see if we can find reasons as to why people don't vote and perhaps, if it's possible to do so, to address those concerns."
'Fundamental reasons'
St Lawrence Deputy Maurice Duras feels it is not just apathy which is stopping islanders voting.
"My feeling is that there are some fundamental reasons why the community - whether it's in the parish or the island as a whole - aren't voting, and I think other parishes and representatives are finding the same.
"We want to give people an opportunity to tell us what it is about the way we're governing that is turning them off, that they're not proud of," he said.
