Public relations executive Ted Vibert is to be Jersey's newest Senator. He beat four other candidates and topped the poll in seven parishes in a by-election caused by the retirement of Senator Ann Bailhache.
Mr Vibert narrowly beat second placed candidate Alastair Layzell by 271 votes.
Senator-elect Vibert is due to be sworn in by Jersey's Royal Court on Friday.

About 26.9% of those registered voted. Mr Vibert topped the poll in seven parishes: St Mary, St Ouen, St Helier, St Peter, St Clement, Trinity and St Saviour.
Second placed Alastair Layzell topped the poll in St Martin, St Lawrence, Grouville, St John and in his home parish of St Brelade, which rejected him as a Deputy last November.
Ian MacFirbhisigh came third with 20% of the total number of votes, followed by Gino Gouveia and Harry Cole.
However, Mr Vibert has had to deny he beat off his competitors with sustained character assassinations on the hustings.
'Numbers game'
Alastair Layzell said: "I don't think negative campaigning is really the Jersey way.
"I could have gone two ways. I could have responded to those attacks.
"I chose not to because I thought it was more honourable to carry on putting forward policies and debating the issues rather than talking about the personalities."
But Mr Vibert said he did not run a negative campaign or carry out assassinations.
Mr Vibert said: "Politics is a numbers game.
"If I had won by one, I am in. If I had won by 10,000, I am in. I have got no doubt the public warmed to what I am saying about the current state of the States."
