Flats 'too trendy', claims deputy
Waterfront development
The development at Albert Pier consists of 147 apartments
New social housing flats on Jersey's Waterfront may be unsuitable and "too trendy" for some tenants, according to a States member.

Deputy Judy Martin was commenting after the completion of the largest single housing project ever undertaken in the island.

The development at Albert Pier consists of 147 apartments, to be split 50-50 between first-time buyers and social housing tenants.

The buildings are now completed, and it is expected people will move in within the next few weeks.

'Fantastic views'

The flats are modern, and some have split levels equipped with galvanised steel spiral staircases.

But Deputy Martin is unsure the new homes will suit everyone.

"Some of these will not be suitable for people, even with minor disabilities.

"One block I have been in has three stories and no lift. There's two one-bedroom flats, and they're at the top.

"The houses will only be suitable for fit, certain types of people."

But Deputy Martin admits the views from the properties are "fantastic".
